Many people who are not famililar with Currency Exchange think that when they hear in the media things like the US Dollar and Canadian Dollar are at par they think that if they go to their local bank that they can trade one Canadian Dollar for one American Dollar. They are often surprised to find that if the market rate (and thus the rate the media shows) the dollar to be at par, whether they want to buy or sell either US or Canadian dollars that they are often several percentage points out in terms of the exchange. 

For example, the market rate for CAD - US is at parity. When you stop by the bank with $100 Canadian you might actually receive $95 US.

Just like the Prime Rate for interest rates, each financial institution marks up the prime rate with their margins to their clients. Many Canadian and US banks charge up to 3% over the market rate and then also charge transaction fees on top.
